2021年9月7日(火)よりYumiko Chiba Associates viewing room shinjukuでは、北井一夫個展「過激派の時代」を開催致します。

「1964年から68年の5年間、私は全学連と全共闘など過激派と呼ばれた学生たちの写真を、その中の一人として撮っていた」（著者、本書より）。

このたび、ユミコチバアソシエイツでは、昨年平凡社より出版された北井一夫の写真集、「過激派の時代」（札幌宮の森美術館発行）の重版を記念して、「過激派の時代」展を開催いたします。
本書は、北井が写真家として活動を始めた最初のシリーズである一連の社会運動の写真を全て網羅した初めての写真集となり、1964年にアメリカ原子力潜水艦横須賀寄港に反対した学生たちの闘争を撮影した「抵抗」を始め、1966年に社会の底辺で働く沖仲士を撮った「神戸港湾労働者」、1967年10月8日に全学連と機動隊が衝突した羽田闘争を撮った「10・8羽田闘争」、1968年に大学民主化を要求して日大全共闘がストライキを起し、バリケード封鎖された校内で学生たちと４ヶ月寝泊まりして撮影した記念碑的写真「バリケード」などから、作家が自ら選抜した写真が収録されています。

1960年代、北井はこれらの運動を内側から写真を撮り続けました。その写真からは、闘争に集まった学生たちの激動の時代に対する切迫感と時代を生き抜く真剣さが伝わってきます。

本展では、一連の運動を含む「抵抗」、「過激派」「バリケード」のシリーズから、63点を展示いたします。

「過激派の時代」
1964-68年に過激派の学生運動を撮り続けた写真を北井自らがセレクトした集大成的な写真集。高精度デジタルリマスター版。
当時、警察の追及を逃れて写真のネガフィルムとベタ焼きを隠し続け、72年まで半年ごとに住居を変えながら、B5判のスケッチブックに貼り付けたベタ焼きを残した。2018年に全共闘50周年を迎え、北井は汚れたスケッチブックを取り出し、全ページをスキャナーで複写して、デジタル印刷で鮮明に蘇らせた。

Yumiko Chiba Associates viewing room shinjuku is delighted to present a solo exhibition of Kazuo Kitai
The Kagekiha opening on Tuesday, September 7.

“During the 5 years between 1964 to 1968, I was taking photographs of the students from Zengakuren, Zenkyōtō [All-Campus Joint Struggle League] and other groups who were together called the “Kagekiha” [Agitators] as a part of their group.” (Kazuo Kitai, The Kagekiha)
Yumiko Chiba Associates is delighted to present The Kagekiha, an exhibition to mark the reprinting by the Miyanomori Museum of Art, Sapporo, of the eponymous volume of Kazuo Kitai photographs published last year by Heibonsha.

The Kagekiha was the first book to cover all Kitai’s work documenting the social movements of 1960s Japan—his first series as a photographer—and contains his personal selections from photo series such as Resistance documenting student protests against the 1964 visit to Yokosuka by American nuclear submarines; 1966’s Kobe Dockers portraying the wharf workers who labored at the bottom of Japanese society; 10.8 Haneda Conflict recording the clash between members of the Zengakuren student organization and riot police on October 8 1967, and the monumental Barricade, which captured the Zenkyoto strike at Nihon University in 1968, when students demanding university democratization barricaded the campus and occupied it for four months.

During the 1960s Kazuo Kitai documented these movements continuously from the inside, and the resulting photos convey the urgency felt by the students who flocked to join the struggles of a tumultuous interlude in Japanese history, and also the sheer intensity of living through that era.

This exhibition presents a total of 63 photographs from Kitai’s Resistance, Agitators and Barricade series. We invite you to take a look.

The Kagekiha
This book with digitally re-mastered high-resolution images, is a collection of photographs captured student’s movements between 1964-68 selected by Kitai himself.
In this period, Kitai placed the films and the contact prints at his acquaintance’s places where nobody would ever notice and switched storage locations every half year to keep them from the police pursuit. When he no longer had to hide them in 1972, he posted all for contact prints on a B5 sized sketchbook.
In 2018, 50 years after Zenkyōtō, Kitai scanned all page of this sketchbook and brought countless images of the student protest back to life vividly by using digital printing technology.
