2021年10月9日(土)より、Yumiko Chiba Associates viewing room shinjuku にて、今井祝雄の個展「SQUARE」を開催いたします。

造形作家・今井祝雄の個展を開催いたします。1946年、大阪に生まれた今井は、19歳で具体美術協会会員となり、同グループが解散する1972年まで会員として活動しました。
本展は、1971年に今井が発表したインスタレーション《Limited Space》を半世紀の時を経て、再構築を試みるものです。ギャラリーの床面よりもひとまわり大きなカーペットを敷き詰める《Limited Space》は、鑑賞者が実際にそのなかに入り、体験することのできる作品です。
また、本展では加えて、草地に1メートル角の透明ガラスを敷き、その際に生じる現象的な変化を撮影した写真作品《SQUARE−glass/grass》（1970）も展示いたします。
ギャラリー空間にカーペットを敷き詰める《Limited Space》、そして、草地にガラス面を置きそこで生じる変化を撮影する《SQUARE−glass/grass》は、どちらも最小限の操作を行うことにより、私たちが自明とする世界のあり方や、美術作品が展示される制度そのものに批評的な介入を試みるものです。その点で、今井の活動は、1970年代初頭のグローバル・コンセプチュアリズムや制度批評的な動きとも連動していたと言えます。70年代初頭から現在に至るまで活発な活動を続ける今井の個展をぜひご高覧ください。

アーティストステートメント

　ギャラリーの床に、実際よりひとまわり大きいサイズのカーペットを敷き詰め、床からはみ出し壁ぎわにまくれ上がったままの端々を桟木で打ち止める。観客はその中に入り込む。1971年にインスタレーションした《リミテッド･スペース》を、ちょうど半世紀を経た2021年、再制作？いや追制作する。
　その方形のギャラリー空間の壁には、写真作品《SQUARE−glass/grass》シリーズが展示される。1970年の夏のある日、草地の上に1メートル角の透明ガラスを置いた。ガラスは重みでやや沈んで、へしゃげた方形の草面の様相を見せ、そこに青空が映りこむ。ガラス面は間もなく草いきれで白く曇り、水蒸気の水滴の中で透過と反映が交りあう。そのわずか数分の間、私は何度もカメラのシャッターを切り続けた。
　キャンバスの突起や穴を穿った制作を始めて以来「内と外、裏と表」の関係は、写真・映像作品においても踏襲されている私の関心ごとであるが、異なる時間と場所で行った以上の2つの作品が同じ空間で出会う。

Yumiko Chiba Associates viewing room shinjuku is delighted to present a solo exhibition of Norio Imai, SQUARE, opening on Saturday, October 9.

Yumiko Chiba Associates is proud to present an exhibition of work by Norio Imai. Born in Osaka in 1946, at the age of nineteen Imai joined the Gutai Art Association, and remained an active member right up until the group disbanded in 1972.
This exhibition attempts to reconstruct, half a century on, the installation Limited Space unveiled by Imai in 1971. Consisting of an oversize carpet laid on the gallery floor, Limited Space is a work that spectators can actually enter and experience for themselves.
Also on display at “SQUARE” will be the photographic work SQUARE−glass/grass (1970), for which Imai laid a square-meter piece of clear glass on grass, and photographed the resulting phenomenological changes.
Both Limited Space with its carpet filling the gallery space, and SQUARE−glass/grass, capturing the changes that occur when a sheet of glass is placed on grass, are minimally manipulative attempts to make critical interventions in the world we take for granted, and in the very system by which works of art are exhibited, and in this sense, Imai’s practice could also be described as connected to the global conceptualism and critiquing of art systems and institutions that emerged in the early 1970s. Don’t miss the opportunity to catch this exhibition by an artist just as active and innovative today as he was in the early ’70s.

Artist Statement

　I will be taking a carpet somewhat larger than the actual floor of the gallery and laying it there, running the excess up the wall and battening it in place. Visitors will step into this space. In 2021, half a century exactly after Limited Space was first installed in 1971, the work will be not so much a remake, as a follow-up.
　A wall of this square gallery space will display the SQUARE−glass/grass series of photos. One day in the summer of 1970, I placed a meter-square piece of clear glass on a grassed area. The weight of the glass caused the grass to sink slightly, a square patch of the grass taking on a crushed aspect, and reflecting the blue sky above. Humid air rising from the grass quickly caused the glass to fog up, transmission and reflection mingling in the drops of condensation. For those few minutes, I clicked the shutter over and over.
　The relationship between inside and out, front and back, is one that has intrigued me since I first started putting holes and protrusions in canvas, one pursued in my film and photography works as well. And here, the above two works created at different times and in different places, will come together in the same space.
