このたび、 Yumiko Chiba Associatesでは、白井美穂の個展を開催します。白井は、1980年代末から、インスタレーション、立体、テキスタイル、ヴィデオなど、複数のジャンルを横断する多彩な活動を展開してきました。
2000年代に入ってからは絵画制作を本格化し、生命や宇宙の循環を示唆する抽象的な形態と象徴的なイメージが交錯する作品を手がけています。2024年には、府中市美術館で個展「森の空き地」が開催され、作家の持続的な思考と幅広い表現の可能性が検証されました。
この度の個展では、幾何学線や放物線、螺旋などを用いたものなど、白井が近年精力的に制作する絵画作品を展覧します。本展のタイトルである「揺れよ、チャリオット」は、古い黒人霊歌 「Swing Low, Sweet Chariot」から取られました。この歌の冒頭では、「そっと揺れて、やさしい馬車よ、私を天の住まいに連れて行くため、迎えに来て」と歌われます。Chariotとは馬車のことであり、それは人を別の場所に運ぶ乗り物としての象徴的な意味をもっています。
「絵画や彫刻を今此処とは異なる、別の世界への出口として制作している」と語る白井にとって、絵画や彫刻はつねに、別の時空への開口部や避難口であり、同時に、この世界に穿たれた別の場所そのものとして現れるものです。絵画によって世界の構造を解きほぐし、そこに新たな運動や回路を出現させる作家の新作をぜひご高覧ください。

アーティストステートメント
私は絵画や彫刻を今此処とは異なる、別の世界への出口として制作しています。現実の物質を扱いながら、その組成や形態、構造とそこに纏わる文脈を解析しつつ、それらを組み替え再編成することで因習的な規範を逸脱しうる世界の構築を試みています。
近年取り組んでいる幾何形態や流動的な線、放物線や螺旋を用いた絵画では、線やストロークによって内側に巻き込む動きと外側に放出される動きを併置し、色彩によるボリュームを伴って空間が収縮と膨張とを繰り返すような視覚表現の追求をしています。
本展のタイトルは古い黒人霊歌 “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” からの引用で、元々は紀元前9世紀のエリヤおよび紀元前6世紀のエゼキエルといった預言者が幻視した、救済と故郷への帰還の象徴である荷車/chariotについて歌われていました。公民権運動においては自由を求める闘いの曲として、その後も20世紀の間に様々に変奏されてきました。宙を右にも左にも前にも後ろにも自在に動く4つの車輪をつけたこのchariotは1976年にはSFと組み合わせた神話となり、PファンクのパーラメントParliamentによるMothership Connectionのステージでは瀕死の世界を救うUFOとして召喚されました。
本展の絵画にあらわれる菱形は、その頂点が上下を指す２つの三角形が結合した、上も下もない世界を示唆し、同時に光の炸裂するレモン型手榴弾の様でもあります。正方形の新作はキャンバスの四辺が内側に折り畳まれた構造を備え、宙をあらゆる方向に自在に動くchariotの動きを内包しつつ、どこか別の世界への避難口であろうとしています。

Yumiko Chiba Associates is excited to announce an exhibition of work by Mio Shirai, whose ever-evolving practice has since the late 1980s traversed multiple genres including installation art, objects, textiles and video.
Embarking on a fuller exploration of painting in the 2000s, since then Shirai has produced work characterized by the interplay of abstract forms and symbolic imagery suggesting the cycle of life, and of the cosmos. The 2024 solo exhibition Clearing in Woods at the Fuchu Art Museum demonstrated the artist’s continuing contemplation of this theme, and the sheer breadth of her expressive potential.
This exhibition presents paintings from what has been an especially productive few years for Shirai, including many featuring geometric lines, parabolas and spirals. The title Swing Down Cosmic Chariot is taken from the old Negro spiritual “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” which begins with the line “Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home”—the chariot here possessing symbolic significance as a means of transport to another place.
For Shirai, who says she makes paintings and sculptures “as exits to other worlds that differ from the here and now,” painting and sculpture consistently act as a portal, or perhaps an escape hatch, to another space and time, simultaneously manifesting as that same place, breaking through into our own realm. Don’t miss the latest offerings from an artist who employs painting to unpack the structure of the world, and cause new movement, and new cycles, to arise there.
Artist Statement
I make paintings and sculptures as exits to other worlds that differ from the here and now. Though dealing with real matter, by analyzing the composition, form and/or structure of that matter and its surrounding context, and rearranging/reorganizing these, I attempt to construct realms that deviate from conventional norms.
My paintings of recent years, employing geometric forms, fluid lines, parabolas, spirals and so on, juxtapose through lines and strokes the motions of being enfolded inside, and discharged outside, in the pursuit of visual expression where spaces seem to repeatedly contract and expand along with the varying volumes produced by coloring.
The title of the exhibition derives from the old Negro spiritual “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” which sung of the chariot as a symbol of salvation and homecoming that originally appeared in the visions of the prophet Elijah in the 9th century BC, and Ezekial in the 6th century BC. Multiple versions emerged in the 20th century as the battle hymn of those fighting for freedom during the civil rights movement. In 1976, this chariot with four wheels moving at whim through the heavens to right and left, forward and back, became a sci-fi-infused myth, summoned on stage as a UFO come to save a dying world during performances of “Mothership Connection” by the P-Funk collective band Parliament.
The diamond appearing in a painting in this exhibition is made by joining two triangles, the apexes of which indicate top and bottom, to suggest a realm with no top or bottom, and simultaneously resembles a classic “lemon” hand grenade exploding into light. The new, square works are constructed with the four sides of the canvas folding inward, and encapsulate the motion of a chariot moving freely through the heavens in all directions, as they endeavor to offer emergency exits to some other world.
