1944 年大韓民国・旧朝鮮府釜山生まれ。1955 年、終戦に伴い熊本市に引き揚げる。1965 年、多摩美術大学絵画科入学。 在学中に高松次郎のアシスタントをつとめる。1969 年、多摩美術大学絵画科卒業(指導教員:大沢昌助)。この頃の展覧会と して、1969 年「第 9 回現代日本美術展」東京都美術館(東京)、「現代美術の動向」京都国立近代美術館(京都)、「第 6 回パリ 青年ビエンナーレ」パリ市立近代美術館(パリ、フランス/高松次郎、田中信太郎、関根信夫とともに「グループ・ボソット」 として参加。コミッショナー:東野芳明)。1970 年「第 10 回日本国際美術展<人間と物質>」東京都美術館(東京)、「1970 年 8 月 現代美術の一断面」東京国立近代美術館(東京)。木材を炭化させた《SUMI》や工業製品を用いた作品で、物や空間の 変容のプロセスを明晰に提示した。1970 年代後半以降は、丁寧に造作したレリーフや絵画を制作、定期的に発表を続けた。 この時期の展覧会に、1987 年「もの派とポストもの派の展開 1969 年以降の日本の美術」西武美術館(東京)、1988 年 「Mono-ha」Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea(ローマ、イタリア)、1994 年「戦後日本の前衛美術」横浜美術 館(神奈川)/グッゲンハイム美術館ソーホー(ニューヨーク、アメリカ)/サンフランシスコ近代美術館・センター・フォー・アッ ト・イェルバ・ビエンナ・ガーデン(サンフランシスコ、アメリカ)巡回(~1995)。
1977-78 年に文化庁芸術家在外研修員として渡欧、1975 年より東京造形大学専任講師(1983 年より助教授)。1992 年 4 月、 47 歳でこの世を去った。
没後の展覧会に、1995 年「1970 年̶物質と知覚 もの派と根源を問う作家たち」岐阜県美術館(岐阜)/埼玉県立近代美術館(埼 玉)/広島市現代美術館(広島)/北九州市立美術館(福岡)/サンテティエンヌ近代美術館(サンテティエンヌ、フランス)巡回(~ 1996)、2005 年「もの派̶再考」 国立国際美術館(大阪)、2012 年「Requiem for the Sun: The Art of Mono-ha」Blum & Poe(ロサンゼルス、アメリカ)、「TOKYO 1955-1970:新しい前衛」ニューヨーク近代美術館(ニューヨーク、アメリカ)、 2015 年「Mono-ha」Fondazione Mudima(ミラノ、イタリア)など。2015 年に東京造形大学で回顧展とシンポジウムが開 催され、2017 年に『成田克彦「もの派」の残り火と絵画への希求』が出版される。また生前から親交のあった AYUMI GALLERY にて、スタジオに残る作品を紹介する個展が続けて開かれている(2016 年、2019 年)。 パブリック・コレクションに岐阜県美術館、グレンストーン美術館などがある。

Born in Pusan City, South Korea, in the then Chosen Prefecture in 1944. Moved to Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, in 1955 due to the end of the war. Entered the Department of Painting, Faculty of Art and Design at Tama Art University in 1965. While in university, he worked as an assistant of Jiro Takamatsu. Graduated from the Department of Painting, Tama Art University, in 1969. (The tutor was Shosuke Osawa) Main exhibitions at that time were: The 9^th Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan), 1969, Trends in Contemporary Japanese Art, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (Kyoto, Japan), 1969, The 6^th Paris Youth Biennale, Musée D’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Paris, France/ Made an entry forming a group named Bosotto with Jiro Takamatsu, Shintaro Tanaka and Nobuo Sekine / a commissioner: Yoshiaki Tono), 1969. Also participated in the 10^th Tokyo Biennale: Between Man and the Matter, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan), 1970 and August 1970: Aspects of New Japanese Art, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan), 1970.

He presented the process of transformation of object and space articulately by SUMI, the carbonized wood work and works utilizing industrial products. Since the late 1970s he produced reliefs carefully crafted and paintings and presented works continuously. For this period, he participated in Art in Japan since 1969: Mono-ha and Post-Mono-ha, Seibu Museum of Art (Tokyo, Japan), 1987, Mono-ha, Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea (Rome, Italy), 1988, Japanese Art after 1945: Scream Against the Sky, Yokohama Museum of Art (Kanagawa, Japan) / Guggenheim Museum Soho (New York, USA) / San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, USA), 1994-95.

He stayed in Europe under a grant of the Foreign Art Study Program from Japanese Government, 1977-78.

He started to teach at Tokyo Zokei University as a full-time instructor and assigned as an assistant professor from 1983.
Died at the age of 47 in April 1992.

After he passed away, his works were included in exhibitions such as: in 1995, Matter and Perception: 1970 Mono-ha and the Research for Fundamentals, the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu (Gifu, Japan) / The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama (Saitama, Japan) / Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (Hiroshima, Japan) / Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art (Fukuoka, Japan) / Musée D’Art Moderne et Contemporain Saint-Étienne Métropole (Saint-Étienne, France), Mono-ha-Reconsidered, The National Museum of Art, Osaka (Osaka, Japan), 2005, Requiem for the Sun: The Art of Mono-ha, Blum & Poe, (Los Angeles, USA), 2012, Mono-ha, Fondazione Mudima (Milano, Italy), 2015.

In 2015, a retrospective and symposium was held at Tokyo Zokei University, and in 2017, Narita Katsuhiko, Embers of ‘Mono-ha’ and Trust in Painting was published. Also exhibitions were held at AYUMI GALLERY who had a friendly relationship with Narita during his life time. The exhibitions were held continuously in 2016 and 2019 that showed works left in his studio.

Works by Katsuhiko Narita are included in major museums’ collections such as The Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu and Glenstone Museum.
