この度、Yumiko Chiba Associatesでは、金氏徹平とリチャード・ペティボーンの二人展を開催します。

金氏は、複雑なイメージを幾重にも組み合わせたコラージュや彫刻の制作で知られています。2023 年からは、立体的な凹凸のある物体にプリントすることのできる最新技術をもちいた、多重レイヤー化され、錯綜する雑多なイメージから構成された作品シリーズ「POOOPOPOO」も手がけています。この作品では、アンディ・ウォーホルやマルセル・デュシャンの作品などの既存のイメージだけではなく、写真やチラシなどの印刷物、子供の落書きや個人的なイメージの断片など、さまざまなイメージが画面に流れ込み、絡み合い交錯しています。

ペティボーンは、既存の作家の作品イメージを小さなサイズの画面に忠実に再現した絵画を制作する作家です。その作品の小さなサイズは、彼が美術雑誌で見た作品のイメージを忠実に再現したものでもありました。それは、モダン・アートの巨匠たちの作品をミニチュア化することで、彼個人のリアルな経験や生活のなかに位置づけるという意味をもつものであったのかもしれません。既存のイメージを絵画として再現し、流用するペティボーンの手法は、1980年代に「アプロプリエーション・アート」と呼ばれる動向の基盤を形成しました。

このように、金氏とペティボーンの作品は、過去の画家たちの作品などの既存のイメージを再解釈し、解体したうえで、そこに個人的な経験を加え変化させ、別の運動や方向を与えていく姿勢によって共通していると言えるかもしれません。
今回の二人展は、ブランクーシとデュシャンを題材としたペティボーンのモノクローム絵画とともに、金氏がそれらの作品にオマージュした「POOOPOPOO」シリーズの新作で構成されます。モノクロームというルールを用いて、二人の作家がどういうゲームを展開するのか、ぜひご覧ください。

アーティストステートメント

モノクローム・ゲームとはチェス、オセロ、囲碁などの一対一で行うアブストラクト・ゲームを指します。
このコラボレーションは、ペティボンによる、20世紀のマスターピースを縮小して手描きでコピーし、積み木や玩具のように再構成する作品群と、私が2023年から展開している、やはり20世紀のマスターピースのパーツを、木、鉄板、ガラスなどの物質の上に絵の具、ステッカー、スプレー、テープなどで作ったベースの上からUVインクで多層的にコラージュし、印刷することを繰り返して新しい絵画的彫刻を作り出す「POOPOPOOO」シリーズとの類似に着目するところから始まっています。
これらのコンセプトの元には、デュシャンのレディメイドや、ブランクーシの彫刻と台座または反復的な造形に関する思考との繋がりがあります。
デュシャンとブランクーシの作品はペティボンも好んで扱う対象でした。それらを扱った作品群から、特にモノクロームの作品を集め、そのペティボンの作品群の元ネタ、またはサイズや構図を元に、新しく「POOPOPOOO」シリーズを制作しました。
モノクロームというルールを用いることで、デュシャン、ブランクーシ、ペティボンとの交通網、もしくは共通のゲーム盤や駒を作り出し、最新の印刷技術と、イメージ収集の方法を用いることで、新しい接続点を含んだ絵画的彫刻を作り出す試みと言えるのではないかと思います。
また、ペティボンのアプロプリエーション的手法の作品を、更にアプロプリエートすることで見えて来る地平は、膨大な歴史や情報、またはそのAI的な処理に対する個人的な抵抗、もしくは考察にもなりえるのではないかと考えます。

*「POOPOPOO」シリーズについて
PとOの羅列は途中までは正確に作品の制作プロセスの順番を追っていますが、途中からは無意味なフィクションです。
photo、on、phenomenon、oil、paint、of、picture、object、panel、over、pour、or、print、opposite、planet、optimize、paper、、、
液体(インクや絵の具)としての写真と絵。
リヒターの"oil on photo" 、高松の"写真の写真"から反転・展開し、"photo on oil"、"絵の写真の絵の写真”。
これらの作品は絵画ではなく、コラージュによって空間を作り出す彫刻だと考えています。
一時的な単位、空間、歴史、集団、価値、を作り、それがまたバラバラになったり、別の何かに変化していく。
閉じた一つとして見えていたものを、解体し、それ自体をマテリアルとして見て、それらの層の中に空間を作ることで異物やフィクションが紛れ込む余地を作っています。

Yumiko Chiba Associates is delighted to present an exhibition of work by artists Teppei Kaneuji, and Richard Pettibone.

Known for collages and sculptures made by combining complex images in manifold strata, since 2023 Kaneuji has been engaged in production of the “POOOPOPOO” series of objects composed of multilayered mishmashes of miscellaneous imagery, fabricated using cutting-edge technology that allows printing on solid objects with uneven surfaces. In these works, myriad visuals flow into the frame, intersect and intertwine; not only images from works by the likes of Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, but photographs, flyers and other printed matter, children’s scribblings, and fragments of personal images.

American artist Richard Pettibone took images from the work of other artists and produced paintings that faithfully duplicated these on a smaller scale. The diminutive proportions of these lookalikes also made them faithful recreations of the images Pettibone saw in art journals. Perhaps miniaturizing works by masters of modern art also served to position them within his own real life and experiences. Pettibone’s technique of recreating existing images as paintings and reusing them formed the basis of a trend that in the 1980s became known as appropriation art.

Thus Kaneuji and Pettibone can be said to take a common approach to art-making of reinterpreting and dismantling existing images such as works by past painters, before modifying them through the addition of personal experience, endowing them with a different kind of movement or direction.

This exhibition comprises Pettibone’s black-and-white paintings on the themes of Brancusi and Duchamp, and new works in Kaneuji’s “POOOPOPOO” series that pay homage to Pettibone’s paintings. Monochrome is the name of the game on this occasion; come see how it plays out in the hands of these two off-beat practitioners.

Artist Statement

“Monochrome Games” refers to abstract games for two players such as chess, Othello, and Go. This “collaboration” began when I noticed the similarities between Pettibone’s works in which he took 20th-century masterpieces, shrunk them, copied them by hand and recomposed them in the manner of building blocks or toys; and my “POOPOPOOO” series, evolving since 2023, in which I take parts also from 20th-century masterpieces, make multilayered collages of them in UV ink on a base made using paint, stickers, spray, tape etc. on materials such as wood, steel or glass, print the result, and repeat the process to create new, painting-like sculptures.
Both Pettibone’s concept and mine trace their lineage at some level to the readymades of Duchamp, and Brancusi’s ideas on sculpture and pedestal, and repetitive forms.
Works by Duchamp and Brancusi were also some of Pettibone’s favorite subjects. From among his works dealing with these artists, I specifically gathered a number that were black and white, and made new pieces for the “POOPOPOOO” series based on the original material for these Pettibone works, and the size and composition of those works.
I suppose my efforts could be described as an attempt, by working exclusively in monochrome, to build a transit network with Duchamp, Brancusi and Pettibone, or a shared game board and pieces, and by using the latest printing techniques and image-gathering methods, produce painting-like sculptures containing new junction points.
I also wonder if the ground revealed by taking Pettibone’s works made using appropriative techniques, and performing further appropriation, might also serve as an individual resistance to, or observation on, the vastness of history and of information, and its processing by AI.

* About the “POOPOPOO” series
The string of “P”s and “O”s start off correctly tracing the steps to make a work, then halfway through, turn into meaningless fiction.
Photo, on, phenomenon, oil, paint, of, picture, object, panel, over, pour, or, print, opposite, planet, optimize, paper...
Photo and picture as liquid (ink and paint).
Inverting/evolving from Richter’s “oil on photo” and Takamatsu’s “Photograph of photograph” into “photo on oil” and “photo of picture of photo of picture.”
I think of these works not as paintings but sculptures that craft spaces from collage.
Forming temporary units, spaces, histories, groups, values that then scatter and change into other things.
I take what appeared to be a single, closed thing, dismantle it, and seeing the thing itself as material make spaces within its layers to create room for foreign objects and fiction to insinuate themselves.
