この度、Yumiko Chiba Associatesでは、写真作家・寺田健人による個展を開催します。寺田は、1991年に沖縄に生まれ、2019年に東京藝術大学大学院 美術研究科 先端芸術表現専攻を修了した気鋭の作家です。近年は、写真を中心に、多様な手法を取り入れたインスタレーションなどを制作し注目を集めています。

寺田が制作する写真は、ストレートフォトから演出を加えたものまで多岐にわたります。たとえば、寺田が想像上の父親となって不在の家族との団欒などを演じる《想像上の妻と娘にケーキを買って帰る》では、生まれ持った性によって決定され内面化される性的規範や社会規範、セクシュアリティ、男性性、そこから排除されるクィア的な性／生のありようなどが多重化された批評的な作品です。寺田は、写真というメディアを通して、社会のなかで不可視化された構造や歴史、見えない他者の姿や声を取り上げようとしているようです。

ギャラリーでは初の個展となる本展では、街の壁に残る銃痕、基地跡地に広がる空き地、戦後訓練に使われた薬莢や、死者に手向けられた冥銭「うちかび」など、寺田の出身地である沖縄にいまも残る戦争の記憶をたどりながら制作された写真と版画による作品を発表します。
本展は、Yumiko Chiba Associatesによる展覧会シリーズ「写真を問う」の一環として開催いたします。ぜひご高覧ください。

アーティストステートメント

語られてきた戦争の記憶がある。
けれど、それでもなお、沖縄の風景や、そこに残るものの手触りには、
言葉にならない感覚や、沈んだままの時間が静かに息づいている。

私は、それらに耳を澄ますようにして、作品をつくっている。
街の壁に残る銃痕、基地跡地に広がる空き地、
戦時中に使われた薬莢や、死者に手向けられた冥銭「うちかび」。
それらの素材に触れ、写真や版画として編みなおしながら、
記憶と現在が重なりあう場所を探っている。

それは記録でも再現でもない。
いまこの場所に生きる身体で、風景や素材にもう一度触れ直すこと。
忘れられた声や、語られなかった感情の痕跡に、そっと手をのばすような行為だ。

今回の作品では、街に残された弾痕のイメージをリトグラフとして刷り上げた。
素材として用いたのは、現在も米軍から放出されている銃弾の薬莢である。
土地に刻まれた傷を浮かび上がらせ、その痕跡を目立たせることで、
癒すのではなく、忘れずにまなざすための “かたち” を探っている。

戦争の記憶だけでなく、
そのなかを生きた人びとのまなざしや、日々の営みにも目を向けたい。
過去は過ぎ去ったものではなく、いまの風景のなかに、確かに沁み込んでいる。

この作品群は、明確な答えを示すためのものではない。
沖縄という場所に立ちながら、
私たちは何を感じ、何を引き継ぎ、何を手放していけるのか――
その問いを、ひとつの風景として差し出す試みである。

Yumiko Chiba Associates is delighted to announce an exhibition of work by photographic artist Kento Terada. A promising young practitioner born in Okinawa in 1991, who completed an MFA in Intermedia Art at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2019, Terada has attracted attention in recent years for photography-centered installations incorporating an array of techniques.

Terada’s diverse photographic practice ranges from straight photography to the use of different effects. For example, living with my imaginary wife and little girl, in which he becomes an imaginary father and acts the part of being in the happy company of an absent family, is a work of multilayered critique covering gender and social norms determined and internalized as a result of the sex we are born with, sexuality, masculinity, and queer approaches to sex and life excluded from all this. Terada appears to be attempting through the medium of photography to pick up structures and histories rendered invisible in society, and the figures and voices of unseen others.

This first solo exhibition of Terada’s work at a gallery will present photographs and prints that trace lingering memories of the war in the artist’s homeland of Okinawa, such as bullet holes left in walls on the street, the vast vacant sites of former military bases, cartridge cases from postwar drills, and uchikabi fake money burned as an offering for the dead.

Artist Statement

There are memories of the war that have long been spoken of.
And yet, within the landscapes of Okinawa̶
in the textures of what remains̶
there continues to breathe a quiet sense,
a time that has sunk beneath the surface and never fully passed.

I create by listening closely to those silent traces.
Bullet marks left on city walls, vacant lots stretching across former military sites,
spent shell casings once used in combat, and uchikabi̶the ritual paper money offered to the dead.
By engaging with these materials and reworking them through photography and printmaking,
I search for spaces where memory and the present moment intertwine.

This is neither documentation nor reenactment.
It is an attempt to reconnect, with my body here and now,
to landscapes and materials that continue to speak softly of what was.
It is a gesture toward forgotten voices,
and toward emotions that were never fully named.

In this work, I have turned images of wartime bullet scars into lithographs,
using shell casings still discharged from U.S. military bases today as the material basis for the prints.
Rather than restoring the wounds of the land,
I seek to bring them into visibility̶
not to heal, but to remember.

I want to look not only at the memory of war,
but at the people who lived through it̶
their gazes, their everyday lives.
The past is not something left behind;
it remains quietly soaked into the landscapes around us.

This body of work does not aim to provide clear answers.
Rather, by standing in Okinawa,
it asks what we feel,
what we inherit,
and what we might be able to let go.
It is a gesture of offering̶of posing that question̶
through the form of a landscape.
