Yumiko Chiba Associates is delighted to present a group show of the prominent Japanese artists from our programme - Masafumi MAITA (1944 - 2009), Kazuyo KINOSHITA (1939 - 1994), Katsuro YOSHIDA (1943 - 1999), Norio IMAI (1946 - ), Kanji WAKAE (1944 - ), Ryudai TAKANO (1963 - ), revisiting the theme of ‘Épreuves de la matière’.

Photography was introduced to contemporary art almost 150 years ago. Originated from pictorialism, photography developed in the West from late 19th to early 20th c. Discourse of photography if it can be art vs. traditional paintings has been done since then – Today, photography is an important genre in contemporary art.
“Épreuves de la matière” (Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2023/24) addressed the theme of the transformative power of photographic materials. Matters/materials such as subject, texture, emulsion, support, digital image varies. Transformation is achieved also in different ways i.e. technique, print, chemical experimentation, hybrid, time passage, disappearance.
Yumiko Chiba Associates will introduce Japanese contemporary photographs from the 1970’s till today at Paris Photo 2024. These exhibit reproducibility, plurality, immediacy, recordability, and objectivity, which are not direct expressions but created with prints and drawings.
We reconsider photographs as art and art as photographs.
