Shiho Yoshida “Survey – Shiho Yoshida”

Had they been ordinarily processed/composite photographs, I would not have been interested in them (here the “processed/composite photographs” mean the ones providing an illusory moment which are made to look real). Shiho Yoshida explored those photographs with the medium of a camera.

For example, in her solo show 2015 (since winning the Grand Prize in the 11th “1_WALL” Photography Exhibition, 2014), her photographic works had been printed on photographic paper and re-photographed. The results emphasized photographs which were no more than artificially reproduced space on thin paper. Also, her other work was shot on a PC screen, showing that it was an encounter with “reality”, but not virtual. These photos indicate how much our lives rely on the plain surface communicated through media. Despite that, Yoshida did such an ironical process based on a deep trust in photographs (Vague emotion hanging on the screen made me realize her partiality for photographs). These seemed to be a photographic attempt to go beyond the limit of photography.

Now, talk about her new works. As I have not seen them yet, I cannot make any comments. According to what she has said, they may be to do with materiality (quantity) of photographs, which is a very different topic from the one in the previous exhibition. So I am already looking forward to what kind of works will come out.

■ Artist Statement

The memory on my hard disk has exceeded the limit in which I had kept data related to mountains.
I perceived the weight of mountains themselves, which could not exist, in the disk space full of the mountains’ images and collected information.
Those mountains I had taken photographs of in various places made me imagine that they would pile up in the small hard disk and make up new mountains, which are not existent in reality, as if piled-up lava forms a mountain.
The virtual mountains had neither forms nor locations, but I wanted to make a way to perceive them.
So I materialized the mountains by shooting their images made optionally and compared them with real mountains and their data.
My work repeats a process to give a form of mountains on non-existing surface of the earth and to fix their outlines, which seems to me a measurement.
