Naruki Oshima “Naruki Ohshima – Figures”

Oshima created strange sceneries in his previous series “haptic green”, by joining more than two-hundred shots in gridlike fashion he had taken with a various focal distance and recomposing them as one photograph. They brought us unknown visual experience, letting us realize how ambiguous a visual image (our impression) is, as well as succeeded to sway human being’s action recognition to perceive an object in front of them.

In Oshima’s new series, Figures, presented as the first public exhibition, his theme changes from “scenery” to “figure” as well as his concept widens from visual recognition to perceptual recognition toward others.

When we usually recognize others, we form impression of them by integrating not only their figures or expressions, but their social attributes, skill, degree of relationship with them, and the subjective reasoning based on our own sense of value and experience in the past. However, Oshima has perceived that recognition of others by such integration may rather drop something important through a crack. Figures is an attempt to ladle out these “dripping things” and to present their existence which can be observed only there.

■ Artist Comment
The motif for the new series is the human body. I have taken photographs of sceneries and still life till now as a main motif, but hardly have dealt with the human body. I have produced some pieces of images of a human figure in black with silkscreen for photomechanical process, but they only showed a coat of black ink which do not specify any figures. The motif “human body”tend to clearly expose a photographee’s social background or internal situation. So, it was a sensitive matter for me to handle them and I had avoided to take it as a motif for a long time. I finally started taking them after I could manage to abstract individual circumstances attaching to the motif.

However, this time, I dared to choose the motif, because of my interest in a lump of tactual sense inherent in the human body, and also my wish to develop possibility of the method experimentally I found with the haptic green series. This method puts together numerous closeup shots by stitching them, by which parts and details of things are connected. Then, it can present the whole thing ex post facto. What appears there is a relationship in which various parts claim first but they are united in the end, being related each other, not that the whole, being strongly centripetal, is assumed first and subordinates the parts to it. To be more precise, an object can be situated in a tense relationship where a part and the whole compete with each other. I think that there is a new possibility different from existing way of photographic expression.

I hope to express, through the above-mentioned method, tactual surface of the human body in relation to the rivalry with a part and the whole. It does not mean to understand or analyze human beings symbolically, but try to grasp them in unspeakable tactual sense. Yet, I do not mean to complete the tactual sense as abstract or anonymous existence, but want to bring the photographee’s characteristics to the front. I think that the characteristics means his/her own existence, being away from what he/she is meant in society such as social status. With this way of understanding, it seems only possible for me to deal with the troubling motif “human body”.
